Stainless steel is not necessarily resistant to acid, but acid-resistant steel generally has good stainless properties. This kind of steel mainly contains chromium, nickel and other alloying elements, and it also contains a small amount of molybdenum, vanadium, copper, manganese, nitrogen or other elements. The chromium content is as high as about 25% (steels containing less than 13% chromium are corrosion resistant only if the corrosion is not strong), and the nickel content is as high as about 20%. This kind of steel is mainly used for manufacturing chemical equipment, medical equipment, food industry equipment, and other devices that require stainless steel.
The most important technical requirements for stainless steel are corrosion resistance, suitable mechanical properties, good cold, hot processing and welding and other technological properties. Chromium is the basic element for the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. When the amount of chromium in the steel reaches about 12%, the corrosion resistance of the steel in the oxidizing medium undergoes an abrupt increase. The surface of the steel at this time forms an extremely thin and dense chromium oxide film, preventing the metal substrate from being eroded (see metal corrosion). In addition to chromium, stainless steel contains other elements, some of which are added as main components, while others are residual impurities.
